CURRENCY CHANGE IN CUBA
Currency Politics: From November 8th, 2004, the US dollar current money for tourists in Cuba, has not legal circulation. Cubans may have US dollars but they should pay on CUC in shopping centers, restaurants and some other places. So, there are two types of currency: the national currency for the majority of Cubans (CUP) and the CUC for shopping.

This CUC replaced all types of foreign currencies used in shopping centers, restaurants, taxis, hotels; which were paid on US dollars. The change rate of CUC in relation to the US dollars and other currencies has changed according to the Cuban National Bank.

Foreigners should pay on catch in CUC. The US dollar, Euro and other foreign currencies may be changed in Currency Change Bureau; as well as, in financial international banks.

Credit cards and Master cards are accepted, but American Express and cards affiliated with North American banks are not accepted. We offer the currency change service of the following currencies: US dollar, Canadian dollar, Euro and Sterling Pounds and the change rate follows the Cuban Central Bank’s instructions.

When you change US dollars for CUC, there is a 20% over change by the change rate. This over change is not applicable to the Canadian dollars, Euros, Sterling Pounds, etc.

To all the tourists except North Americans, the currency change means that when you arrive to Cuba you should change your money to CUC in the airport or in the hotel. You may also change your money in Currency Change Bureau (CADECAS) located in different places of our city. The day of your departure you may rechange the CUC to your national currency, there would be a bank recharge when you rechange the CUC.

To the North American visitors, you have two choices: before coming to Cuba, you may buy Canadian dollars, Euros, Francos Suizos, Sterling Pounds, etc, then you may change your money as it is explained above. You may buy US dollars with CUC, but there is a 20% additional bank recharge.

How to change your money: When your are waiting for your laggage at José Martí Airport you may change your money at Currency Change Bureau (the rest of the airports has similar systems). In Cuba, any bank or Currency Change Bureau offers currency change service.

When you are leaving Cuba, you may change the CUC to your currency before arriving to the airport, because it could be possible that your currency is not available. Remember, you should pay on CUC the Departure Tax and some souvenirs if you want to buy on the airport shops.

For you to know: the CUC and the CUP are not the same currency: CUC as "dollar" and the CUP as Cuban pesos. The Cuban people named the CUC "chavito" and the CUP as “national currency” ($1 CUC = 24 CUP). Actually, a few group of tourist use the Cuban pesos. But you may use the Cuban pesos successfully. There would be a misunderstanding with the sing $ for both currencies. It is very simple, when you go to a restaurant or to cafeteria you may ask the clerk if the pay is on CUC or CUP.
